Welcome to Welland 2019! Below you’ll find information on our full programme for this year – it’s full of exciting, creative, and inspiring opportunities to explore ways to live well for longer. You can download the programme or scroll down for all the info.

Why not join us at our launch event on Wednesday 29th May, 6-7pm, at Song Bird Cafe on Victoria Road to get yours hands on a programme too!

Lots of activities have also been happening in Elland already, including schools workshops with professional dance company Northern Rascals, community meetings, and guided walks with our Associate Artist for 2019 Alice Bradshaw – you can read more about them all here.

Programme

Important Info:

  • Workshops & activities are offered on a ‘pay as you feel’ basis meaning you can make a donation of any amount on the day but there’s no obligation to.
  • Welland is a non profit event and all donations received will go towards next year’s festival.
  • Booking isn’t required for most workshops but places are limited so try to arrive on time to secure your place.
  • Outdoor footwear is not permitted in the main hall or mini studio at Wainwright Hall – please bring some comfy socks or indoor shoes to wear (with non marking soles), otherwise bare feet is fine.
  • We recommend you wear something you can move in easily if you’d like to take part in fitness activities.
  • Children should be accompanied by an adult at all times.

AFRICAN DRUMMING WORKSHOP – WITH ELLAND SILVER BAND

Kicking off Welland 2019 and our global theme is this lively & energetic African drumming session suitable for all ages, no experience necessary. A great way to beat out your stress and have some fun!

TAEKWON-DO TASTER SESSION – WITH TSX TAEKWON-DO ELLAND

11am, Wainwright Hall

Fitness, fun & self-defence! Empowering people & communities through internationally recognised tuition covering all aspects of Martial Arts fitness & self defence. Come along & try out the different aspects of Taekwon-Do!

SENSORY HUB AT THE REX – WITH PROJECT 52 CIC

11am – 1.30pm, The Rex Cinema

A sensory hub for people with learning disabilities & differences – activities will include a relaxed film screening of The Gruffalo followed by free play and sensory drama. The drama follows Jack and Nancy through their adventures, filled with music, songs and sensory play!

PILATES – WITH DAN COX OF DC FITNESS

A class to improve flexibility, build strength, and develop control and endurance for the entire body. Emphasis will be on alignment, breathing, developing a strong core, and improving coordination and balance.

PERFORMANCE OF ‘SUNNY SIDE’ – BY NORTHERN RASCALS

12pm and 2.30pm, Bethesda Church

Northern Rascals will be performing an excerpt of their newest work that considers our emotional connection tothe geographical features of where we grow up and howthis impacts our hopes and aspirations as we grow.

‘SUNNY SIDE’ DANCE WORKSHOP – WITH NORTHERN RASCALS

A glimpse into the workings of a professional dance company & a brilliant introduction to contemporary dance. Northern Rascals warmly welcomes all abilities, so grab something comfortable, enjoy the music &find your inner rascal!

FAMILY FITNESS SESSION – WITH SHARON PORTER FITNESS

1pm, Bethesda Church

Group fitness class for the whole family, encouraging every member to give it their best – while giving you, as a family, a really fun time together. It’s a great way to instil good exercise habits in children, whilst revitalising older family members!

PELVIC FLOOR & CORE RESTORE WORKSHOP – WITH SHARON PORTER FITNESS

2.30pm, Wainwright Hall

A group session helping women strengthen their core and pelvic floor for life. Suitable for every woman who wants to take preventative action, or to help women with current issues that need improving.

FAMILY DRUMBEAT, FAMILY HEARTBEAT! – WITH LORNA MCTAVISH COULSON

3pm, Wainwright Hall

Come together, have fun with drums and even write a short family chant! Especially accessible for people with mild to moderate Dementia. The workshop uses a model taught to Lorna by an inspirational Native American teacher.

CIRCUIT CLASS – WITH DAN COX OF DC FITNESS

3pm. DC Fitness

A high intensity workout to help with weight loss and toneyour body. This session involves progressing throughdifferent exercise stations and is high energy & fast paced!

CALM & CONNECTED MOVEMENT CLASS – BY CUREL CIC

4pm, Wainwright Hall

Relax through movement; explore different stretching, breathing and mobilisation activities. Improve posture,reduce stress & anxiety, and enhance your overall quality of life. Mats will be provided but feel free to bring your own.

MEET THE BREWER – ELLAND CRAFT & TAP

5.30pm, Elland Craft & Tap

Smell the hops, learn the science and craft behind making the perfect pint, and get to taste the difference on us! Sample a range of beer types, ask questions, and generally have some fun.

CAP STORIES EXHIBITION AND WORKSHOP – WITH WELLAND ASSOCIATE ARTIST 2019 – ALICE BRADSHAW

10am – 4pm, Bethesda Church

Associate Artist Alice Bradshaw has been collecting stories about Elland from the community and discarded bottle caps through guided litter-picking, story-telling walksaround Elland, and via local collections and workshops.The resultant artwork will be unveiled at Welland 2019 and visitors will be welcome to add to the installation through a workshop too (materials will be provided but feel free to bring your own bottle caps!).

The finished work will also be on display at Wainwright Hall throughout Sunday 9th June.

COMMUNITY RUN – WITH DAN COX OF DC FITNESS

Join us for a guided run around the town centre, exploring the different areas of Elland & enjoying time outside. Suitable for everyone of any ability and age. We’ll be meeting and finishing at Songbird Cafe.

PLAYBACK THEATRE PERFORMANCE – WITH THREADBEAR THEATRE

11.30am, Wainwright Hall

In Playback Theatre, ThreadBear bring your stories to life with music & drama. We welcome you to share your stories and see moments from your lives made into theatre,creating connections with each other along the way.

WOMEN’S HEARTBEAT DRUMMING – WITH LORNA MCTAVISH COULSON

12.30pm, Wainwright Hall

Continuing our global theme, this is a workshop for women. Using drums & rattles inspired by Native America to help connect with your heartbeat – building confidence & celebrating you! An exciting way to spend your Sunday!

SOUNDSTRIPES 4 – CO-CURATED BY ALICE BRADSHAW, VANESSA HALEY & JONNY BEST

An eclectic screening of short silent films, live scored by local musicians. This special screening brings together early 20th century silent film with contemporary artists’ films, curated in response to the theme of ‘Move Well, Live Well’

CORE WORKOUT SESSION – WITH DAN COX OF DC FITNESS

12.30pm, DC Fitness

This session will help you improve your core strength through all directions of movement. Having a strong core helps to improve posture, reduce pain & injury, and improve function – ultimately helping you feel happy and healthy!

OPEN VARIETY DANCE WORKSHOP – WITH KAREN BINNS STAGE SCHOOL

The chance to learn a variety of basic dance steps and a small routine to show off your skills whilst having fun.

ELLAND SILVER BAND CLOSING PERFORMANCE – ELLAND SILVER BAND’S ADULT TRAINING BRASS ENSEMBLE

3pm, Wainwright Hall

A short recital of easy listening pieces to close Welland 2019! The ensemble will perform a selection of pieces, from classical to swing, which they have been working on over the past term.

MINDFULNESS & WELLBEING – REDFEARN THERAPIES AND DEVELOPMENT

11am – 3pm, Wainwright Hall

A combination of sessions including: Mindfulness,‘Tapping’ therapy, hypnotic group confidence boost session, mini hypnotherapy session, and a group Reiki healing meditation. Drop in throughout the day to join in!
