This year we have also offered a series of smaller events and workshops across Elland, helping to connect and engage with the community, local businesses, and schools – increasing access to wellbeing activities for all.

Festival Launch

Welland 2019 launched at Song Bird Cafe on Wednesday 29th May, where visitors could get a copy of the programme and find out more about our plans for 2019 and beyond! There was cake, bubbles, and lots of joy!

Welland Business Networking

A networking event with a twist! This event was not just about doing business, it explored how wellness is relevant in the workplace, and ways we can all achieve this. Hosted by Elland-based business, ABS UK, we enjoyed a morning of movement, discussion, and of course networking!

Elland is full of lots of large, international businesses as well as brilliant small, independent ones, and so this event was a first step towards connecting them with each other and also the people who live in Elland, for the benefit of everyone in and around the area.

David Lees from ABS shared how they focus on Corporate Social Responsibility through investing in sustainable and meaningful projects locally and abroad. This also helps to motivate staff and enhance positivity across their organisation.

We’re hoping to run more events similar to this, helping to deepen connections between business and community in Elland – if you’d like to know more please get in touch.

Schools workshops

A series of residencies with professional arts organisations in primary schools in Elland.

Local charity, Chol Theatre, provided dance and drama workshops for St Patrick’s Primary School. Workshops explored Chol’s unique ‘Imaginary Communities‘ arts education programme, where the children have been able to explore fictional stories and worlds through movement and dance.

Calderdale-born dance company, Northern Rascals, ran a range of workshops for children at Old Earth School as part of their upcoming new production ‘Sunny Side’. Northern Rascals will be performing an excerpt of ‘Sunny Side’ at the festival and will also be running a workshop then too – check out the programme here.

‘Cap Stories’ Guided Walks

with Welland Associate Artist Alice Bradshaw

An exploration around Elland, litter picking and sharing stories – stories of the past and imagined stories of the future – in preparation for Alice’s new installation created for Welland – ‘Cap Stories’.

We enjoyed time exploring Elland and learnt about the history and heritage of our town too!

More info here:

‘Cap Stories’ will also be on display in Elland Library until October 2019

‘Spark’ Meetings

We received lots of great ideas and suggestions for the 2019 festival through our ‘Spark’ Meetings earlier this year – a chance for the community to let us know what they’d like to see at Welland. With thanks to Elland Craft & Tap for hosting us!
